About A Level Maths
A Level Maths is the qualification students sit in their final year of school, and the one many university courses ask for by name. Engineering, medicine, economics, computer science and physics all expect it. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is real. Content moves faster, answers need more working shown, and examiners reward precise method as much as the right answer. Mechanics and statistics catch students out because they look unfamiliar at first. A Level Maths Exam Boards We Cover
Maths A Levels come in two families. AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the content is set by the government and is identical between them — only the paper split changes. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel International follow their own international syllabuses. We teach both families, always to your child's exact specification.
Edexcel
Two routes sit under this board. UK students sit three two-hour papers: Pure 1, Pure 2, and Statistics and Mechanics. International A Level students sit six modular units instead — P1 to P4 in pure maths, plus two applied units such as Mechanics 1 and Statistics 1.
AQA
Three papers, each two hours, 100 marks and a third of the final grade. Paper 1 is pure maths, Paper 2 adds mechanics, and Paper 3 adds statistics.
Cambridge
Six shorter papers spread across the two years. Papers 1 and 3 are pure maths, and your child chooses two applied papers from Mechanics, Probability and Statistics 1, and Probability and Statistics 2.
OxfordAQA
Two stages. The International AS is taken in the first year and counts for 40% of the final grade. The International A2 in the second year carries the other 60%.
