About A Level History
A Level History is the qualification students sit in their final year of school. It suits anyone heading for history, law, politics, international relations or journalism degrees. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is the depth of the argument. A Level rewards a clear line of reasoning, backed by precise dates, names and figures. Students also have to handle two harder things: judging how far a source can be trusted, and weighing up what different historians have argued. Both are examined on every board.

A Level History Exam Boards We Cover
AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the exams come at the end of the two years. Cambridge International follows its own syllabus, with exams in more series and topics that change from year to year. AQA and Edexcel each include coursework worth 20%. Cambridge is exam-only.
Edexcel
Three papers and coursework. Papers 1 and 3 are 2 hours 15 minutes and worth 30% each. Paper 2 is shorter, at 1 hour 30 minutes and 20%. The coursework is the final 20%, written on a question the school sets. Papers 1 and 2 come in eight fixed combinations, so the options are locked together and Paper 3 depends on the route chosen.
AQA
Two written papers of 2 hours 30 minutes, each 80 marks and worth 40%. Both open with a compulsory question, on historical interpretations in Paper 1 and on primary sources in Paper 2. The last 20% is a historical investigation of 3,500 to 4,500 words. Students must take one British option and one non-British option.
Cambridge
Four papers, all exams, with no coursework. Papers 1 and 2 make up the AS, on historical sources and an outline study. Papers 3 and 4 complete the A Level, on historical interpretations and a depth study. The AS topics rotate between Papers 1 and 2 each year, so which paper your child sits depends on the exam year. Exams run in June and November.
