About A Level Biology
A Level Biology is the qualification students sit in their final year of school, and the one that opens medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and biomedical degrees. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is real. There is far more content, and the wording matters as much as the science. A correct answer can still miss the mark if it uses the wrong term or skips a step. Practical work, data questions and longer written answers carry weight that GCSE never asked for. Your child's tutor teaches the language examiners look for.

A Level Biology Exam Boards We Cover
Biology A Levels come in two families. AQA and Edexcel are UK boards, where the content is set by the government and is identical between them — only the paper split changes. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel International follow their own international syllabuses. We teach both families, always to your child's exact specification.
Edexcel
Two routes sit under this board. UK students sit three papers of 100 marks: The Natural Environment and Species Survival, Energy Exercise and Co-ordination, and General and Practical Applications in Biology. International A Level students sit six units instead, including two dedicated practical skills units.
AQA
Three papers. Papers 1 and 2 are 91 marks each. Paper 3 is 78 marks and ends with a 25-mark essay chosen from two titles. Practical techniques are tested inside the papers.
Cambridge
Five papers: multiple choice, structured questions, a two-hour practical test, longer A Level structured questions, and a paper on planning, analysis and evaluation. Exams run in June and November.
OxfordAQA
Two stages. The International AS counts for 40% of the final grade and the International A2 for the other 60%. Ten required practicals are assessed through the written papers, so there is no separate practical exam.
