About A Level Accounting
A Level Accounting is the qualification students sit in their final year of school. It runs over two years: Year 12 first, then Year 13, when the exams happen. Many schools call that second year A2, and others call it Grade 12 or Upper Sixth. It suits anyone heading for accounting, finance, economics or business degrees. You can see how A Level is structured across both years.
The step up from GCSE is accuracy under pressure. A Level questions run in long, linked steps, and one wrong figure early carries through every part that follows. Students also have to explain what the numbers mean, not just calculate them, and move from bookkeeping into ratio analysis and management accounting.
Every lesson starts from the specification your child's school follows, so study time goes where it counts. We mark real past papers and show exactly where the marks went, and we pull extra practice from our past paper library. Parents can follow progress in the Centaurus Academy LMS all through Year 13.

A Level Accounting Exam Boards We Cover
AQA is the UK board and sets exam papers only, with no separate AS. Cambridge International, OxfordAQA and Edexcel all offer a staged route, where the AS counts towards the full A Level. Edexcel is the most flexible on timing, with three exam series a year. None of the four sets coursework, so every mark comes from the exams.
AQA
Two papers, each 3 hours, 120 marks and worth 50%. Every paper has three sections: multiple choice and short answers, two structured questions, then two longer written questions. Both papers are compulsory and there is no separate AS, so students take the whole two-year A Level. At least 20% of the marks test quantitative skills.
Cambridge
Four papers and a staged route. Papers 1 and 2 make up the AS: a multiple choice paper of 1 hour and 30 marks, then Fundamentals of Accounting at 1 hour 45 minutes and 90 marks. Papers 3 and 4 complete the A Level, on Financial Accounting and Cost and Management Accounting. The AS work is assumed knowledge for both. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India.
OxfordAQA
Four papers, split into an AS and an A2. Papers 1 and 2 each run 2 hours and are worth 20% of the A Level. Papers 3 and 4 each run 2 hours 15 minutes and are worth 30%. Every paper follows the same pattern: multiple choice and short answers, then structured questions, then one longer written answer. Exams run in May/June and January.
Edexcel
Two units on the International A Level, each a 3 hour written exam worth 200 marks and 50%. Unit 1 covers the accounting system and costing. Unit 2 covers corporate and management accounting. Every paper comes with a resource booklet, and calculators are allowed. The units are modular, with exams in January, June and September, so they can be sat across more than one series.
How Centaurus Helps A Level Accounting Students Excel
Accuracy Under Pressure
Long, linked questions punish a single slip. We build checking habits into every step, so one wrong figure does not carry through the whole answer.
Method, Not Memory
We show students a repeatable method for each statement type, so they can set out workings clearly and pick up method marks even when the final figure goes wrong.
Interpretation and Analysis
Modern papers ask what the numbers mean. We train students to comment on ratios, trends and limits, using the vocabulary the mark schemes reward.
Management Accounting
Costing, budgeting and decision making carry a large share of the marks on Cambridge, OxfordAQA and Edexcel. We cover these as their own topics, not as an afterthought.
Exam Board Precision
AQA, Cambridge, OxfordAQA and Edexcel ask for different things. Lessons follow the exact paper structure, question wording and command words your child will meet.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
