About Edexcel IGCSE Business
Edexcel IGCSE Business is code 4BS1, written for first teaching from September 2017 with the first examination in June 2019. This page works from Issue 2, dated February 2026, and first certification was in 2019.
The qualification has two papers and they are identical in almost every respect. Both are externally assessed. Both are worth 50% of the total International GCSE. Both are written examinations of 1 hour 30 minutes. Both carry 80 marks. Both are available in June and November, and both can be sat paper-based or onscreen. There is a single tier of entry, so no Foundation or Higher decision is involved, and learners may use a calculator in both papers.
The one thing that separates them is the size of the business in the question scenarios. Paper 1 is Investigating small businesses, code 4BS1/01, and its scenarios are based on a small business of up to 49 employees that has a local or national market. Paper 2 is Investigating large businesses, code 4BS1/02, and its scenarios are based on a large business of more than 250 employees that has a multinational or global market.
That is the whole of the difference, and it has a consequence that shapes how the course should be taught. Neither paper is assigned its own set of topics. Both draw on topics taken from the whole of the subject content, and the specification states plainly that the examination for Paper 1 and Paper 2 can draw on the knowledge and understanding from across the entire specification content. So the five content sections are examined twice over, once through a small business lens and once through a large one.
The five content sections are business activity and influences on business, people in business, business finance, marketing, and business operations. The specification is careful to say that although these are listed as discrete topics, learners need to recognise that the five areas interrelate, because business is dynamic. Section 1 introduces the nature and types of business in an economy and the interaction between businesses and their environment. Sections 2 to 5 focus on the main functional areas.
Both papers have the same internal shape, and it is rigid. Each consists of four compulsory questions, each worth 20 marks. So every question carries exactly the same weight, and there is no choice of question on either paper. Within each 20 mark question the sub-questions are a mixture of multiple-choice, short-answer, data-response and open-ended questions, which means each question moves from recall through to judgement rather than testing one level.
The assessment objectives are four, and the specification adds a limit that is unusual and very useful to know. AO1, recall, select and communicate knowledge and understanding of business terms, concepts and issues, is 27 to 28 per cent. AO2, apply knowledge and understanding using appropriate business terms, concepts, theories and calculations effectively in specific contexts, is 38 to 39 per cent. AO3, select, organise and interpret business information from sources to investigate and analyse issues, is 22 to 23 per cent. AO4, evaluate business information to make reasoned judgements and draw conclusions, is 11 to 12 per cent.
The limit sits as a footnote to AO1. It states that a maximum of 15% of total qualification marks will assess knowledge recall. So although AO1 is 27 to 28 per cent of the qualification, the amount of it that can be pure recall of facts is capped at 15%. A student who has memorised the textbook but cannot use it in a context is capped, by design, well below half marks.
Application is the largest objective at 38 to 39 per cent, and it explicitly includes calculations, which is why calculators are permitted. Both papers carry identical weights of 13.7% AO1, 19.4% AO2, 11.3% AO3 and 5.6% AO4.
The qualification is graded on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1, and individual components are not graded. Students below the minimum standard receive an unclassified U result. Each paper carries 80 marks.

Edexcel IGCSE Business: The Board We Cover
Edexcel is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from Pearson's own 4BS1 specification, Issue 2, dated February 2026.

Edexcel's International GCSE Business is code 4BS1, two papers of 80 marks and four compulsory 20 mark questions each. Both papers examine the whole syllabus, so the only difference is whether the business is small or large.
How Centaurus Helps Edexcel IGCSE Business Students Excel
The Whole Syllabus, Twice
Neither paper has its own topic list, so every section is taught so it can be applied to a small business and to a large one.
Small and Large Compared
The same concept is worked through for a business of up to 49 employees and for one of more than 250, which is exactly how both papers test it.
Recall Capped in Practice
With pure recall capped at 15%, revision is built around using knowledge rather than reciting it.
Calculations Drilled
Application is 38 to 39 per cent and names calculations, and calculators are allowed, so the numbers are taught properly.
Judgement Practised
AO4 rewards reasoned judgement and conclusions, so students practise deciding and justifying, not just describing.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
