About Edexcel AS Level Maths
Edexcel AS Level Maths is code 8MA0, and its full title is the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Mathematics. First teaching was September 2017 and first certification was 2018. This page works from Issue 3, dated October 2025.
The qualification consists of two externally examined papers. The specification states that students must complete all assessment in May and June in any single year, so the two papers cannot be split across two summers.
Paper 1 is Pure Mathematics, code 8MA0/01. It is a written examination of 2 hours worth 62.5% of the qualification and carrying 100 marks. It covers nine topics: proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the x and y plane, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, and vectors.
Paper 2 is Statistics and Mechanics, code 8MA0/02. It is a written examination of 1 hour 15 minutes worth 37.5% of the qualification and carrying 60 marks. It has two sections. Section A is Statistics, covering statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions, and statistical hypothesis testing. Section B is Mechanics, covering quantities and units in mechanics, kinematics, and forces and Newton's laws.
So the split is not even. Pure Mathematics is 62.5% of the qualification and carries 100 of the 160 marks available across the two papers, while statistics and mechanics together are 37.5% and 60 marks. A student who divides revision time equally between the two papers will be underweighting the larger one.
Neither paper offers a choice. Students must answer all questions on both, which means no topic can be dropped and no question can be avoided. Calculators can be used in both assessments.
Statistics carries a requirement that is easy to postpone and expensive to postpone. Pearson has provided a large data set which supports the assessment of statistics in Paper 2, and students are required to become familiar with the data set in advance of the final assessment. The specification goes further and says the assessments will be designed so that questions assume knowledge and understanding of the data set, and that these questions are likely to give a material advantage to students who have studied it.
That last phrase is unusually direct for a specification. The questions assume familiarity with the terminology and contexts of the data, and may use summary statistics, selected data or statistical diagrams based on it, or samples related to its contexts. A student who meets the data set for the first time in the exam room is reading new material under time pressure.
There is a formulae booklet, and one detail about it matters. A booklet called Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables will be provided for use with the paper. But Appendix 1 of the specification lists the formulae that students are expected to know for AS Level Mathematics, and those will not appear in the booklet. So the booklet is not a substitute for memory; it covers the formulae that are not listed in Appendix 1.
Calculators are allowed in all AS Level Mathematics examinations, with conditions. The calculator must include an iterative function, and the ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions. It must be of a size suitable for use on the desk, either battery or solar powered, and free of lids, cases and covers that have printed instructions or formulas. It must not be designed or adapted to offer language translators, symbolic algebra manipulation, symbolic differentiation or integration, or communication with other machines or the internet.
The assessment objectives are three. AO1, use and apply standard techniques, is 58 to 62 per cent. AO2, reason, interpret and communicate mathematically, is 18 to 22 per cent. AO3, solve problems within mathematics and in other contexts, is 18 to 22 per cent.
Standard technique is by far the largest objective here, at well over half the qualification. Selecting and correctly carrying out routine procedures and accurately recalling facts, terminology and definitions is the main business, and reasoning and problem solving share the rest almost equally.
The per-paper split follows the weightings. Paper 1 carries roughly 37 to 40 per cent of the qualification in AO1, 11 to 14 per cent in AO2 and 10 to 13 per cent in AO3. Paper 2 carries roughly 18 to 21 per cent in AO1, 8 to 10 per cent in AO2 and 8 to 11 per cent in AO3. The specification notes that the totals have been rounded either up or down.
The qualification is graded on a five-grade scale from A to E using the total combined marks out of 160 for the two compulsory papers, and individual papers are not graded. The first certification opportunity was 2018. Students below the minimum judged by Pearson to be of sufficient standard receive an unclassified U result. The qualification number is 603/1307/9.
Issue 3 was a round of clarifications rather than a change of content, but two of them are worth knowing because they settle what is and is not required. In kinematics, the guidance for section 7.2 replaced a statement about understanding and using suvat formulae for constant acceleration in two dimensions with a statement that graphical solutions to problems may be required, and the same two-dimensional suvat sentence was removed from section 7.3. Issue 3 also added the alternative notations for combinations, an example of finding the finite area bounded by a curve and given straight lines, a note that students may be required to convert one unit into another such as km h to the minus one into m s to the minus one, and a note that distance and speed must be positive.
Who Edexcel AS Level Maths 8MA0 Is For
This course suits students sitting Edexcel AS Level Maths 8MA0 who need the larger pure paper handled properly and the statistics and mechanics paper prepared rather than left to the last term.
- Students sitting Edexcel AS Level Maths 8MA0
- Students who divide revision evenly between a 100 mark paper and a 60 mark one
- Students who have not looked at the large data set before the exam
- Students who expect the formulae booklet to supply every formula
- Students whose calculator lacks an iterative function or the statistics distribution functions

Edexcel AS Level Maths: The Board We Cover
Edexcel is the board this page covers. Every fact here comes from Pearson's own 8MA0 specification, Issue 3.
Edexcel
Edexcel's AS Level Maths is code 8MA0, a 100 mark pure paper at 62.5% and a 60 mark statistics and mechanics paper at 37.5%, both sat in the same May or June with no choice of question.
How Centaurus Helps Edexcel AS Level Maths Students Excel
The 62.5 to 37.5 Split Respected
Time is allocated to match the marks, so the 100 mark pure paper gets more of the year than the 60 mark paper.
The Large Data Set Covered Early
Students meet the data set in the first term, because the questions assume familiarity and the specification says studying it gives a material advantage.
Formulae Known Where It Counts
The booklet is provided, but the Appendix 1 formulae will not appear in it, so those are learned deliberately.
Calculators Checked
The iterative function and the standard distribution functions are confirmed in good time, along with what the calculator must not do.
Mechanics Clarified
Two dimensional suvat is no longer in the guidance for kinematics, so revision follows the current wording rather than an older textbook.
24/7 Progress Reporting
Families get access to the Centaurus Academy LMS, with attendance, progress and lesson notes available to parents, students and teachers at any time.
