About Cambridge O Level Accounting
Cambridge O Level Accounting is syllabus 7707. This page works from the syllabus for exams in 2027, 2028 and 2029. Exams are available in the June and November series.
All candidates take two papers, and all candidates are eligible for grades A* to E. The grade range stops at E, and anything below it is ungraded. There is no Core and Extended tier.
Several things changed for candidates sitting from 2027, and they are worth knowing if a family has an older past paper or an older textbook in the house. Paper 1 now lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 40 marks, with candidates answering 40 multiple-choice questions. For candidates sitting in 2026 the paper was shorter, at 1 hour 15 minutes with 35 marks. Paper 2 now states that candidates answer five compulsory questions, and it remains 1 hour 45 minutes with 100 marks.
The weighting of the assessment objectives also shifted slightly. AO1 knowledge and understanding is now 66 per cent, AO2 analysis is 24 per cent and AO3 evaluation is 10 per cent. Under the 2026 syllabus the figures were 65, 25 and 10. The change is small, but a page or a revision guide quoting the older numbers is out of date.
The paper weightings have not changed. Paper 1 is worth 30% of the qualification and Paper 2 is worth 70%, so the qualification is still decided mostly by the structured written paper.
There is no coursework and no practical assessment. Both components are externally assessed written papers.
This qualification is heavily weighted towards knowledge. AO1 at 66 per cent is the largest share by a long way, and within the papers the picture is sharper. Paper 1 is 80 per cent AO1, 20 per cent AO2 and nothing on AO3. Paper 2 is 60 per cent AO1, 25 per cent AO2 and 15 per cent AO3.
So every mark for evaluation in this qualification comes from Paper 2, and the multiple choice paper cannot award one. A student who can prepare accounts accurately has most of the qualification covered, but a student who cannot interpret them cannot reach the top grades.
One generous provision is worth knowing. The syllabus states that the accounting ratios are given in full, so candidates are not expected to recall every formula from memory. The skill is choosing which ratio answers the question and explaining what the answer means, not memorising the list.
The subject content is organised into seven topics. Topic 1 is the fundamentals of accounting, covering the purpose of accounting and the accounting equation. Topic 2 is sources and recording of data, covering the double entry system of book-keeping, business documents, and books of prime entry.
Topic 3 is verification of accounting records, covering the trial balance, correction of errors, bank reconciliation and control accounts. Topic 4 is accounting procedures, covering capital and revenue expenditure and receipts, accounting for depreciation and disposal of non-current assets, other payables and other receivables, irrecoverable debts and the allowance for irrecoverable debts, and valuation of inventory.
Topic 5 is the largest in practice: the preparation of financial statements, including year-end adjustments, for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, plus manufacturing accounts, clubs and societies, and incomplete records. Topic 6 is analysis and interpretation, covering the calculation and understanding of accounting ratios, their interpretation, inter-business comparison, interested parties, and the limitations of accounting statements.
Topic 7 is the section that changed most, and it is now called accounting concepts and modern practice. It introduces the main accounting concepts together with how they are applied, and it adds two things that older syllabuses did not carry. The first is ethics: candidates need an understanding of the need for an ethical framework in accounting, the fundamental principles of integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behaviour, and the significance to stakeholders and society of applying that framework.
The second new element is technology and sustainability. Candidates need an understanding of the use of digital applications for all or part of the accounting records, the need to store accounting data safely and sustainably, the risks of not doing so, the different types of storage systems including manual records, data storage devices, cloud services and other digital services, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. The syllabus adds a helpful limit: candidates do not need knowledge of or access to specific accounting software packages or programs.
The ten accounting concepts named in Topic 7 are worth knowing word for word, because a question can simply ask a candidate to recognise or apply one. They are business entity, consistency, duality, going concern, historic cost, matching or accruals, materiality, money measurement, prudence and realisation. They are also the reason some accounting treatments are the way they are, so learning them as a list to recite misses the point.
The syllabus asks candidates to apply their understanding to a variety of accounting scenarios, and to make simple decisions based upon the analysis and evaluation of information provided. That is the part that separates a student who can prepare a set of accounts from one who can say what the numbers mean.
The qualification is graded A*, A, B, C, D or E, with A* the highest and E the lowest. A candidate whose performance does not meet the standard required for grade E is ungraded, which is reported on the statement of results but not on the certificate.
