About Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies is syllabus 0450. This page works from the syllabus for exams in 2026, version 2, published December 2025. Exams are available in the June and November series, and also in the March series in India.

All candidates take two components, and all candidates are eligible for grades A* to G. There is no Core and Extended tier, so every student sits the same papers and is graded across the whole range.

Paper 1 is Short Answer and Data Response. It lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, carries 80 marks and is worth 50% of the qualification. It contains four questions requiring a mixture of short answers and structured data responses, and candidates answer all questions.

Paper 2 is Case Study. It also lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, carries 80 marks and is worth 50%. It contains four questions based on a case study, which is provided as an insert with the paper, and candidates answer all questions.

The two papers look balanced on paper, but they ask for different things. Paper 1 tests knowledge at a heavier weighting, and Paper 2 tests analysis and evaluation at a heavier weighting, because the case study gives students something concrete to reason about. A student who can define every term but cannot weigh up a decision in a business context will do better on Paper 1 than Paper 2.

The syllabus is explicit that candidates are required to apply their understanding to a variety of simple business situations, and that they should be able to make simple decisions based upon the analysis and evaluation of information provided. That sentence describes Paper 2 almost exactly: a small business, some data, and a decision to justify.

There is no coursework and no practical assessment. Both components are externally assessed written papers.

The subject content is organised into six topics: Understanding business activity, People in business, Marketing, Operations management, Financial information and decisions, and External influences on business activity.

Topic 1 introduces the underlying ideas and concepts of business, including the purpose and nature of business activity and how businesses can be classified, enterprise and entrepreneurs, why some businesses grow while others remain small, how business size can be measured, types of business organisation, and business objectives and stakeholder objectives.

Topic 2 covers the human resources function: the importance and methods of motivating a workforce, how businesses are organised and managed, the methods of recruitment, selection and training of employees, and the importance and methods of effective internal and external communication.

Topic 3 covers the role of marketing, the distinctions between niche and mass markets, the techniques of market segmentation, the methods and importance of market research, the central role of the marketing mix, which the syllabus describes as the four Ps, and marketing strategies to influence consumer decisions at home and in new foreign markets.

Topic 4 covers the functional area of production: the meaning and methods of production and how productivity can be increased, the different costs of production and break-even analysis, the importance and methods of achieving quality in the production process, and the location decisions of businesses.

Topic 5 is the finance and accounting section. It covers the need for and sources of business finance, cash-flow forecasting and working capital, simple income statements, statements of financial position, and the analysis of accounts including why and how accounts are used.

Topic 6 covers external influences on business activity: government influences on economic, environmental and ethical issues and how they affect the functional areas of a business, and the international economy including globalisation and its effects on businesses and governments, multinational businesses and exchange rates. The syllabus notes that legal constraints are also an external influence, but that they are covered within the relevant functional areas above as well as in this final section.

The assessment objectives are four. AO1 is knowledge and understanding, covering facts, terms, concepts, conventions, theories and techniques commonly applied to or used as part of business behaviour. AO2 is application, covering applying that knowledge and understanding. AO3 is analysis, covering distinguishing between evidence and opinion in a business context, and ordering, analysing and interpreting information in narrative, numerical and graphical forms using appropriate techniques. AO4 is evaluation, covering presenting reasoned explanations, developing arguments, understanding implications and drawing inferences, and making judgements, recommendations and decisions.

The overall weightings are AO1 at 40 per cent, AO2 at 20 per cent, AO3 at 25 per cent and AO4 at 15 per cent of the qualification.

The per paper weightings show how differently the two papers behave. Paper 1 is 50 per cent AO1, 20 per cent AO2, 20 per cent AO3 and 10 per cent AO4. Paper 2 is 30 per cent AO1, 20 per cent AO2, 30 per cent AO3 and 20 per cent AO4.

So evaluation is worth twice as much on Paper 2 as on Paper 1, and analysis is worth half again as much. Application is the only objective weighted identically on both papers. A student whose revision is mostly definitions and diagrams is revising for the smaller half of Paper 2 and will not reach the higher grades there.

The qualification is graded A*, A, B, C, D, E, F or G, with A* the highest and G the lowest. A candidate whose performance does not meet the standard required for grade G is ungraded, which is reported on the statement of results but not on the certificate.

How Centaurus Helps Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies Students Excel

Case Study Practice

Evaluation Taught Explicitly

AO4 is worth twice as much on Paper 2, so judging, recommending and justifying are taught as skills.

Both Papers Weighted Properly

Paper 1 leans on knowledge and Paper 2 on analysis, so revision is pitched to the paper being sat.

All Six Topics Covered

From business activity to external influences, with marketing, operations and finance given equal time.

Numbers Handled
