About Edexcel GCSE Chemistry
Edexcel GCSE Chemistry is code 1CH0, with a qualification number of 601/8611/2, written for first teaching from September 2016 and first certification in June 2018. It has two written papers. Paper 1 is coded 1CH0/1F and 1CH0/1H, Paper 2 is coded 1CH0/2F and 1CH0/2H, and each is a written examination of 1 hour and 45 minutes worth 100 marks and 50% of the qualification. Both are available at foundation tier and higher tier, and a student must complete all assessments in the same tier.
Each paper consists of ten questions and students must answer all of them, mixing multiple choice, short answer, calculations and extended open-response. Calculators may be used. That shape, ten questions across 1 hour and 45 minutes, is worth planning for, because it fixes how much time each question can take before the paper is even opened.
The nine topics split so that Topic 1 sits in both papers. Paper 1 covers Topic 1 Key concepts in chemistry with Topic 2 States of matter and mixtures, Topic 3 Chemical changes, Topic 4 Extracting metals and equilibria and Topic 5 Separate chemistry 1. Paper 2 covers Topic 1 again with Topic 6 Groups in the periodic table, Topic 7 Rates of reaction and energy changes, Topic 8 Fuels and Earth science and Topic 9 Separate chemistry 2.
Two of the nine topics are named for what they are. Topic 5 is called Separate chemistry 1 and Topic 9 is called Separate chemistry 2, and that naming is literal: this is the content that makes the qualification a separate science rather than part of Combined Science. A student moving from Combined Science should expect the topic list to look familiar and the depth not to be.
Twenty-seven marks of each paper are overlap questions that appear in both the foundation and the higher tier paper, so both tiers share a common core of 27 marks and the tier decides the rest. Practical work follows the same pattern as the rest of the Edexcel sciences: eight mandatory core practicals, all examined inside the written papers, and a Practical Science Statement that the centre must submit to Pearson by 15 April in the year the student sits the examinations.
